What Trauma-Informed Care Means
Trauma-informed care means we understand that behavior is often a child’s way of communicating stress, fear, or unmet needs – especially in early childhood. Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with this child?” we ask, “What has this child experienced, and how can we support them?”
🧠 Understanding Fight, Flight, or Freeze
When children feel overwhelmed, their bodies may enter a survival response. These reactions are stress responses, not intentional misbehavior.
- Fight: hitting, biting, kicking, yelling
- Flight: running away, hiding, avoiding activities
- Freeze: shutting down, becoming quiet, not responding
🧒 How Our Teachers Support Emotional Regulation
Our teachers are trained and educated in trauma-informed practices that focus on co-regulation—helping children calm before expecting self-control.
We support children by:
- Using calm voices and gentle body language
- Getting on the child’s level to build trust
- Providing consistent routines and transitions
- Offering calming spaces and coping tools
- Teaching age-appropriate emotional language
- Partnering with families and foster care teams
❌ What Our Approach Is Not
We believe discipline should teach, not harm.
We do not:
- Yell, shame, or label children
- Use isolation as punishment
- Expect emotional control beyond developmental ability
💛 Why Trauma-Informed Care Matters
A predictable, emotionally responsive environment helps children:
- Feel safe and secure
- Build trust with caregivers
- Reduce stress-related behaviors
- Develop healthy emotional regulation skills
- Healing begins when a child feels safe.
